Generator Artist Profile
I am a freelance visual artist/educator from Bray, Co. Wicklow. I have studied art, craft and design for over 8 years at BIFE, NCAD, The Ceramics Skills and Design Course run by DCCOI and I have a Masters in Ceramics from University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. Previously, I won the “Innovation Award” at the Future Makers competition organised by the DCCOI and was placed second in the RDS Craft Competition. I have been in 18 exhibitions in Ireland Seattle and Wales.
Currently, my studio is at the Leitrim Sculpture Centre, Manorhamilton. My most recent group exhibitions include: Three Strands a solo exhibition at the watergarden Gallery Kilkenny, Shape The Future at the National Craft Gallery, Kilkenny running untill the 5th of February, Ceramics Ireland Selected Exhibition at the Pearse Gallery, Dublin and The Leitrim Sculpture Centre Christmas Open Exhibition.
I am preparing for two more solo exhibitions in 2017; Ranalagh Arts Centre opening on the 6th of April and Signal Arts Centre, Bray in November.
There are three primary strands within my practice: experimental sculptures, expressionist ceramics and modern frescos. Each strand influences and encourages the next, therefore they subconsciously evolve together.
I take inspiration from nature and weathered man-made objects that I find. Using my camera, I constantly gather images on adventures around the countryside, photographing the intense colours and compositions of nature and the many old, dilapidated farmsteads of Leitrim and Roscommon. Recently, I discovered a time capsule near where I live – a perfectly preserved forge. Although silent now, it was full of traces of the lives that made it a hive of activity 100 years ago. Images like this are the research that informs my work. The craft skills I have learned help me to expose the materials I work with to reveal their unique properties and beauty. This includes form, texture and colour vibrancy.
